ESMEOSTE Masterclass

The AMEE-ESME courses, offered and accredited by AMEE, are aimed at practising teachers in medicine and the healthcare professions, both basic scientists and clinicians. They are aimed at those new to teaching and at teachers with some experience who would like a greater understanding of the basic principles and an update on current best practice. The courses recognise that, with appropriate help, all, even those with considerable experience, can improve their skills in teaching.

Purpose: The objective structured teaching encounter (OSTE) is one of several ways of assessing, but most importantly, giving structured feedback on a teaching encounter.  Like in an OCSE there are three roles within the assessment. The person being assessed, the observer and the actor with the presenting problem. An OSTE can be used in many contexts, and in this workshop we will explore its use in a common teaching situations: Giving feedback on a case presentation and supporting a junior through a difficult experience.  The approaches to be used will be outlined and we will each have the opportunity to develop, deliver and observe at least one OSTE.  Some participants will be able to experience an OSTE as a candidate or standardised actor.

Content:  The course will address four essential elements of healthcare professions education:

  • To provide participants with an opportunity to apply their understanding of educational processes to solving real-life problems,
  • To enable participants to demonstrate their skills in helping learners
  • To develop participants’ abilities to analyse complex situations and make sound judgements
  • To encourage participants to reflect upon the ways in which educational skills can be analysed and assessed.
  • Adapt educational concepts to local needs.
