PASREV Course

Practical Skills for Reviewing Evidence in Health Professions Education – a BEME course

Background: This course has been designed to present and develop a set of core skills that are key in using and undertaking systematic reviews in the healthcare professions. These will include: developing relevant topics for review; considering and selecting appropriate methods for review and synthesis of evidence; searching and appraising research; synthesising studies; writing up a review in a manner that can impact practice and using and peer reviewing of education reviews. The focus will be on systematic reviewing using a diverse range of synthesis methodologies, including descriptive, justification and clarification reviews that will include potentials for quantitative, narrative and qualitative methodologies. We will also consider other methodologies gaining prominence in the field that can be completed within a systematic framework, including scoping reviews and realist reviews.

Supportive material:  Before the course, participants are expected to read the material sent in advance, namely a set of 2/3 papers and videos concerning introductory key topics, which cannot be delivered during the course to save time for practical exercises and discussions. After the course, participants will receive a USB disk with relevant bibliography.

Audience: The Course is designed for all healthcare professionals interested in planning, implementing and reporting a systematic review as well as those interested in reviewing/managing a systematic review. Whilst the Course draws on experience gained with the Best Evidence Medical Education (BEME) Collaboration, it is appropriate for a wider audience and will consider other forms of evidence review and synthesis within education that can be performed within a systematic framework and published numerous outputs.

Course Level: Introductory / Beginners.

Mentoring:  Participants will be supported by PASREV tutors, during (face-to-face) and after the course (online), namely those who decided to submit an assignment, as described below.

Post-course assignment: Participants may choose to submit, within six months of completion of the course, a protocol for their own review, or appraisal of a published review. If completed to a successful standard, award of the PASREV Certificate will be made.
