Half Day:              0930-1230

Level:                    All

Summary of theme and why it is important:  Every clinical encounter is, in certain respects, also an ethical encounter.  By the same token, every clinical educational event is also an ethical educational event.  The challenge in all medical educational settings is how to unpack such ethical content for our students through teaching for understanding.
On the three-circle learning outcomes model (AMEE Guide No.14), ‘doing the right thing’ is as founded upon depth understanding as are ‘doing the thing right’ and ‘the right person doing it’.  For the medical ethics educator, this entails more than simply conveying to students what is ‘the right thing to do’, but also promoting student learning in medical ethical reasoning.
To achieve this, there are two conditions for our instructional strategy: (a) a discursive person-to-person space – whether in the room, or via an internet platform, or in any written format, online or otherwise, with feedback – in order to educe relevant ethical underpinnings; and (b) tools for ethical analysis informed by moral philosophical insights.

Who should participate in the Pre-Conference Workshop?  New and experienced ethics teachers, clinicians responsible for some ethics teaching, and course tutors with or without clinical backgrounds.

What will they gain from participating?  This workshop will equip participants with systematic resources in a ‘teaching for understanding’ approach to medical ethics education.  Beginning with a framework for ethics in the medical curriculum as set out in AMEE Guide No.53, the session will give attention to key concepts in moral theory and explore their use in discussing clinical scenarios with students.

Cost: Euros 90 (includes coffee)

PLEASE NOTE: Pre-conference Workshop participants must also register for AMEE 2019 and pay the conference fee.
