Advanced Presentation and Communications Skills for Medical Educators: Killing it From the Podium

Date:                    Sunday 25th August
Half Day:              0930-1230
Level:                   Advanced

  1. Lawrence Sherman, Academy for Global Interprofessional Learning and Education, USA
  2. Kathy Chappell, American Nurses Credentialing Center, USA

Summary of theme and why it is important:  All medical educators have to give live presentations, whether it is in front of a classroom or in front of thousands of learners at an international conference – it’s in the job description.  We all develop our own styles and approaches, but many of us never receive formal training or evaluation of these skills!

This workshop is designed to be completely interactive, and to share and enhance best practices in presentation styles and skills.
The workshop will be geared towards identifying the best practices in each participant, and encouraging group discussion.  Lists of skills and techniques will be developed, and groups will work to prioritize the skills into need to have versus nice to have, and individualized differences will be highlighted and addressed.

Some of the topics that will be addressed include:

  • Real-time needs assessment

  • Reading an audience

  • Use of visual aids

  • Positioning/posture/voice/hands

  • Moving from passive to active teaching

  • Meeting Interprofessional and Multidisciplinary needs

Participants will be encouraged to be open and active during the session!
Participants should bring a 3-5 minute presentation to the session in order to practice in small and large group settings!

Who should participate in the Pre-Conference Workshop? The target audience for this workshop is novice and experienced medical educators seeking to enhance and embellish their presentation techniques, while also helping their peers to do the same.

What will they gain from participating? Participants will increase their competence and performance in various presentation settings.  They will also gain the ability to help evaluate and coach others in presentation style and format

Cost: Euros 90 (includes coffee)

PLEASE NOTE: Pre-conference Workshop participants must also register for AMEE 2019 and pay the conference fee.
