The ESME courses, offered and accredited by AMEE, are aimed at practising teachers in medicine and the healthcare professions, both basic scientists and clinicians. They are aimed at those new to teaching and at teachers with some experience who would like a greater understanding of the basic principles and an update on current best practice. The courses recognise that, with appropriate help, all, even those with considerable experience, can improve their skills in teaching.

Purpose: The ESME Course provides foundational competencies required of all medical and healthcare professions teachers.  Participants will learn and practice being a skilled educational planner, an effective teacher in multiple formats and an informed assessor/evaluator. This highly acclaimed and interactive course delivers immediately useful outcomes in a wide range of teaching, learning and assessment methods.  Practice hands-on organisation of learning and assessment in a planned curriculum. Upon completion, participants will have acquired a working vocabulary with an applied framework for understanding both theory and practice in their everyday workplace.

Content: The ESME Course provides competencies required of medical and healthcare professions teachers in their role as information provider, facilitator of learning, role model, curriculum planner, and assessor.
The course has been designed to run in conjunction with AMEE and other medical education conferences.

Participants have the option of completing a short post-course report, demonstrating the application of the principles introduced in the course to their own teaching practice. Successful completion results in the award of the ESME Certificate in Medical Education, which is accredited by AMEE.

Who should attend?: The course is relevant and practical for all healthcare professions teachers in both undergraduate and postgraduate education.

Facilitators: The faculty and course director for the ESME is directed by Stewart Mennin, Consulting Associate for the Human Systems Dynamics Institute; Professor Emeritus, University of New Mexico, USA, and Ronald Harden, formerly Professor of Medical Education at University of Dundee, UK.
We look forward to welcoming you to the course and will work with you to ensure you enjoy the experience and get maximum benefit from participating.
