Online open-book exam – a novel assessment method in COVID-19 times and beyond

ABSTRACT:

Summary of Theme and Why it is important: Due to the COVID19 pandemic, medical schools all over the world shifted to online teaching learning strategies. The challenge however was to assess the students online. The major hurdle of an online exam is ensuring that the students are not cheating during the conduct of the examination. 

Open book examination is an assessment method which effectively rules out the problem of cheating. This form of examination has been found to encourage deep learning, critical thinking, and decreased stress of examinees, and is in practice in some places in the world. Conducting an online open book examination is a novel assessment method which has not been explored much. This method was tried out at our institute with promising results. This workshop has been conceived to propagate the idea of online open book examination through training of interested medical faculty.

  • Formulate suitable questions for online open book examination
  • Identify barriers and strategize methods for implementation in self institute
  • Plan and conduct an online open book examination

The paper on 'Open book online examination' has been accepted by The Journal of Laryngology and Otology recently, the experience of which would be shared with the participants.
