The Essential Skills in Medical Education courses, offered and accredited by AMEE, are aimed at practising teachers in medicine and the healthcare professions, both basic scientists and clinicians.

ESME courses are designed to be of value to those new to teaching, and for teachers with some experience who would like a greater understanding of the basic principles and anupdate on current best practice. The courses recognise that all teachers, even those with considerable experience, can improve their skills in teaching. Participants who complete course assignments receive an AMEE-ESME Certificate in Medical Education in the areas addressed by the course.

About ESME face-to-face courses

Each course addresses the basic skills required by teachers in the healthcare professions in a specific area of practice. All of the face-to-face courses:

  • Are organised in different parts of the world around major educational conferences;
  • Include a pre-conference workshop, recommended conference sessions and a post-conference workshop;
  • Are led by international experts with personalised tutorial support provided during the conference;
  • Are designed to be interactive and engaging;
  • Provide a comprehensive set of resource material to support the course;
  • Provide opportunities for discussion with other course participants before, during and after the conference sessions;
  • Are certified by AMEE and approved by an International Advisory Board. A certificate of attendance is provided and there is an opportunity to work towards an ESME Certificate in Medical Education. The ESME Certificate is recognised as stage one of the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) Fellowship Award.

The courses have now been running for several years and are widely acclaimed by course participants.

Face-to-face courses/masterclasses

  • ESME - Essential Skills in Medical Education:  Provides an overview of the competencies required of medical and healthcare professions teachers in their role as information provider, facilitator of learning, role model, curriculum planner, and assessor. The course has been designed to run in conjunction with AMEE and other medical education conferences
  • ESMEA - Essential Skills in Medical Education Assessment:  Provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of assessment and is aimed at people new to assessment who wish to gain a thorough foundation in the subject.
  • ESMELead - Essential Skills in Educational Leadership and Management:  Provides an introduction to key aspects of leadership and management for healthcare educators who wish to develop a deeper understanding of leadership and managment theory and gain an evidence base to help them become more effective leaders.
  • ESCEL – Essential Skills in Computer-Enhanced Learning:  Prepares participants to develop, deliver, and evaluate computer-enhanced learning activities using sound educational principles and a range of creative technologies.
  • ESMECPD – Essential Skills for Continuing Education and Professional Development:  Provides an introduction to those who are currently involved in the planning, organization and/or implementation of medical (health) education at the continuing professional development level.
  • ESMECT - Essential Skills in Medical Education Clinical Teaching:  Provides an introduction to fundamental skills needed to teach effectively in the clinical setting, informed by educational theories and available evidence.
  • ESMEET - Essential Skills in Medical Education Evaluating the Teacher:  Will develop educators understanding of evaluation and giving and receiving.
  • ESMESim – Essential Skills in Medical Education Simulation:  Provides an introduction to essential skills for delivering simulation-based healthcare education through a variety of techniques and technologies.
  • RESME – Research Essential Skills in Medical Education:  Provides an introduction to the essential principles and methods of conducting research in medical education: formulating research questions, choosing a research approach, selecting an appropriate methodology, and constructing a research plan.

Who Should Attend

There is increasing recognition of the knowledge, skills and attitudes that contribute to quality in teaching and of the need for formal training in the area. The ESME courses are aimed at practising teachers in medicine and the healthcare professions, both basic scientists and clinicians. They are aimed at those new to teaching and at teachers with years of experience who would like a greater understanding of the basic principles and an update on current best practice. The courses recognise that, with appropriate help, all, even those with considerable experience, can improve their skills in teaching.

'The ESME course is the first course that has stimulated me to doing something substantive with my own education on medical education. The statement, “a good teacher is better than a good program” was what struck me most. In short, the good teacher will take into account the aspects of designing a teaching or learning activity as being outcome-based, considering how to design the curriculum, how learners learn and how teachers should teach, and evaluation of the learner’s assimilation of the material based on the desired outcome, as well as the effectiveness of one’s teaching program. In my own previous teaching endeavours, it was mainly teacher-centred and information driven. I now consciously attempt to make it more learner-centred and problem-based. The ESME method is indeed a useful tool for developing a good teaching program which can be adapted to many teaching situations.'
