A high quality online course for teachers in the healthcare professions

About Course

The AMEE Essential Skills in Medical Education Assessment (ESMEA) course is aimed at people involved with teaching in the health professions who have limited experience in assessment and who wish to gain an insight into practical applications. It is also relevant to others who already have an interest in assessment and wish to gain a foundation in the theoretical underpinnings.  Participants should have some fundamental knowledge and experience with medical/healthcare education (e.g. have taken part in the Foundations ESME Course).

After completing the course, participants will have acquired a vocabulary and framework for understanding essential concepts in assessment, and familiarity with the principles for their practical implementation.

The award of the AMEE-ESMEA Certificate in Medical Education provides evidence of the participant’s interest in education and skills related to medical education assessment.

The highly successful face-to-face ESMEA course has been offered since 2007 at major international medical education conferences. This online course has been offered since January 2017.

All that is needed to participate is access to a broadband internet connection.

The course is delivered over 12 weeks and has six modules.

  • Pre-recorded video presentations: Each presenter will provide an overview, theoretical foundations, practical applications and latest thinking on the most important aspects of assessment
  • Interactive webinars: led by experts in the field of health professions education, these live chat session offer the opportunity for synchronous discussion
  • Online discussions: offer the opportunity to take part in building on the ideas and principles gained in the webinars, and applying them in your own context
  • Key resource materials: plus access to relevant AMEE guides
  • An AMEE-ESME Certificate in Medical Education Assessment is awarded on the basis of satisfactory participation in the six modules, and completion of an end of course assignment

  • The course offers a flexible approach. You can take part at a place - home or work - and at a time convenient to you.
  • The course is practical with a clear and simple theoretical underpinning. The ideas are presented in such a way that they can be applied to your day-to-day work as a teacher or trainer.
  • You engage with colleagues with a similar interest in a supportive, non-threatening learning environment.
