Adaptive leadership: Building resilience in challenging situations
About the module
Over the course of three units in this health professions education leadership course module, we’ll explore what it means to lead effectively when challenges are complex, unpredictable, and resistant to straightforward solutions.
We’ll define adaptive leadership and consider how it differs from more traditional leadership approaches to problem-solving.
You’ll be introduced to practical tools such as the ‘Cynefin Framework’ for diagnosing challenges, and you’ll learn principles from leading thinkers like Ronald Heifetz to help you engage stakeholders, manage uncertainty, and foster resilience in yourself and your teams.
Although we’ll draw on examples from healthcare and health professions education (HPE), the focus of the module will be on developing your ability to apply adaptive leadership concepts to the specific challenges you face in your own context.
The overall aim of this module is to equip you with the mindsets, strategies, and practical techniques needed to identify adaptive challenges, regulate stress, and sustain progress during times of change.
By the end, you’ll be able to approach high-pressure situations with greater clarity, adaptability, and confidence.
