Burnout and Engagement among PhD students in medicine

Introduction
The rise in mental health issues among PhD students is a global problem. A PhD trajectory is a period of intense work with many ups and downs. How this trajectory is experienced by PhD students is dependent on internal factors within the student and external factors related to the supervision team, the organizational infrastructure and culture. 
 
Educational needs or gaps to be addressed
In this webinar Rashmi Kusurkar will present the results of her study on burnout and engagement of PhD students in medicine in their work using the framework of Self-determination Theory.
 
Aim / learning objectives:

  1. To make PhD students aware of factors associated with burnout and engagement in PhD work.

  2. To engage PhD students in a conversation about stressors and energizers in their PhD work.

  2. PhD students get concrete tips on what can be done to avoid a burnout and to be more engaged in their PhD work.

Faculty development through an organisational lens

Introduction
Faculty development (FD) is a critical strategy that supports faculty members performing their varying roles in health professions education (HPE). FD should be programmatic and conducted systematically to provide longitudinal support for educators. However, the consistency and effectiveness of FD often depends on organizational factors. Therefore, while faculty developers need to employ various FD methods, to be successful they also need deeper understanding of the organizational factors affecting FD practice.

This webinar presents two prominent scholars who will explore FD using Bolman and Deal’s four frames of organizations, focusing on symbolic, political, structural and human resource factors that influenced FD practice in the Canadian setting. The findings highlight the role of the FD unit, the importance of FD visibility, the responsive expansion of FD practice, and the role leadership and policy can have on human resources for FD.

The use of escape rooms in health professions education

This Webinar id the first of a two-part series focused on the use of escape rooms in health professions education. This initial webinar will provide an overview of what is meant by an escape room, how these can be used within health professions education and the evidence underpinning their use.

Introduction
Escape rooms are a team exercise, whereby participants discover and solve various puzzles within a fixed amount of time. Escape rooms are typically situated within one or multiple rooms, which are decorated in a specific theme, to offer an immersive experience. Both commercial and educational escape rooms exist. Educational escape rooms are increasingly being utilised within health professional's education for both clinical and non-clinical learning objectives. Examples of non-clinical learning objectives include, but are not limited to, teamwork, problem-solving and leadership.

Educational need or gaps to be addressed
Educational escape rooms are a relatively new teaching method within health professions education. Given their novelty, many remain unfamiliar with the method. However, educational escape rooms can be utilised  for a range of clinical and non-clinical learning objectives, and thus, they offer a potentially valuable teaching approach. Therefore, a greater understanding of this method within the educational community is required, in addition to highlighting the remaining questions surrounding this topic, which demand further research.

In this webinar, we aim to introduce the concept of educational escape rooms within health professions education and the evidence underpinning their use.

Anticipated Outcomes
By the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to - 
Define the concept of educational escape rooms.
Describe a teaching session using an educational escape room.
Identify ways in which educational escape rooms can be used in health professions education.

Target Audience
As educational escape rooms are a versatile and adaptable teaching method, which can be implemented for both clinical and non-clinical learning objectives, this webinar will be relevant to educators of all health professions disciplines. Furthermore, as the concept is relatively new within health professions education and further research is required to enhance our understanding of this educational tool, this webinar will also be relevant to researchers within this field.
